The tiny room quickly filled with steam, and I didn’t bother to close the curtain as the hot water sluiced over me. Shelby kept a stock of soap and body wash on a rack in the corner, and I blindly grabbed the first thing my hand came in contact with. I squirted it on a washcloth and squeezed more directly onto my shoulders and head. Something fruity filled the air as I scrubbed. I dragged the cloth back and forth harder and harder, trying to get the grime of memories off my skin. The sting of the scratches I was layering all over my torso didn’t register. My breath came faster as the need to wash away the last six months became an obsession.
Beloved, stop.
I rested a hand against the tile as my chest heaved. I fisted the useless washcloth in my other hand. It’s all over me, Lord. I can’t get it off. What they did is all over me! How do I get it off? When there was no response, I smacked the wall.
“Do you even hear me?” I yelled. “You tell me I’m loved, and then you let me feel like this? You let those monsters…” I shoved back, dropping the cloth with a wet smack. “Never mind.”
I stared at the water swirling into the drain, disappearing along with my requests for His help. Hadn’t I learned yelling wouldn’t change anything? It certainly hadn’t done Mouse or me any good in that hell hole of a house, so why would it make a difference now?

Excerpt from Uncovering Officer Smith:
Becca
Meggie and I almost started crying during the pre-game shot, toast. Her parents decided to pull her out of summer classes. This is her last weekend before she has to return home. I don’t know what I’m going to do without her. She almost said the exact same thing during her toast, but we quickly chased it down with some humor. I mean, after all, we’ll be apart for barely two months.
When you spend every single day together, two months feels like an eternity. Tonight is going to be a good night. Just my best friend and me – we promised each other a girl’s night. For the first time in my life, I was totally lying.
There are a ton of bars on The Ave. We could have gone to any number of them, and probably should have… but truthfully, I wanted him to see me. Meggie and I saunter up to the bouncer on the patio stairs in our heels and he automatically waves us in. After sharing a glance, we giggle before walking into the flap of the tented patio. The white material billows up into two points above the patio and the light filters through, casting an eerie ambiance. My eyes scan the crowd.
Meggie catches my eye. “I don’t see him, Bee.”
I look away. “I don’t know who you’re talking about.”
She smiles. “You know exactly who I am talk about.” She guides me across the patio to the outside bar, conveniently squeezing in between a pair of guys, and places our drink order.
“Oh, excuse me, boys.” Meggie is the queen of striking up conversation. The bartender places the drinks on the bar top and I happen to notice one of the guys reaching for his wallet.
“Let me get those for you, doll,” he offers.
“Oh, I couldn’t possibly…” Meggie starts and I roll my eyes. She definitely could possibly, and he is totally being played.
They exchange a few words before she passes me one of the drinks. She waves to them as we walk away arm in arm.
“I don’t know how you do it.” I giggle in her ear.
“Men are suckers.” She wiggles her fingers at a bouncer in the doorway to the back entrance of the club and we slip inside. “It’s almost like they deserve it. You see, Becca, you can let them play you—Or you can play them first.”
“That’s no way to be, Meggie.”
“That’s the only way to be.” She lifts her drink to her lips and swallows a gulp.
My head nods before glancing around, just one more time. John is stationed in his usual spot against the far wall, overlooking the dance floor. His stern glare surveys the area as groups of girls gravitate to the dance floor in front of him. He has a vibe about him that begs to be enjoyed. Tonight, I want to give in. I crave spontaneity and adventure the way a college girl should. But most of all, I want to be that way with him.

Book Description:

It’s summertime and the last place 19-year-old Dante Elton wants to be is at his grandmother’s in rural upstate New York. But it’s exactly where his parents dump him, as they jet off to Europe. Without a car, cell service, or even basic television, there is nothing to do but wander around the nearby woods just as he had as a small child…

There he meets sexy—and slightly older—Angie Sewall while on a hike. On the surface, she’s a devoted daughter content to be single while she manages her father’s medical practice. Yet deep down, Angie is bored and heartbroken…and is harboring some special gifts that she keeps secret from her father and their backwoods community.

When Dante’s grandmother’s health declines, he reaches out to Angie’s father for help, only to uncover the good doctor’s dark side. When Dante confides in Angie, it drives a spike into their budding relationship. He’s left to wonder if he’s all alone in his quest to save his grandmother

Excerpt:

As the sun splintered through the gaps in the tarp, Dante held Angie in his arms while she slept. He had never felt or even imagined being this happy. He watched her sleeping peacefully, half-expecting she would just vanish like the girl from his dream. She seemed other-worldly, more of a product of his imagination than the surrounding environment. In the real world, a beautiful girl like Angie would barely give him the time of day. She wouldn’t be into reading horror or Japanese anime either. She would probably be rejecting his friend request on Facebook.
He still hadn’t told Angie that she had appeared to him in his dream back in New Jersey. He figured she would probably just laugh at him. The past few weeks, he had assumed he would forget about it. Yet somehow, the thought wouldn’t vacate his brain. If she had actually appeared to him in his dream, this was no ordinary girl, and that frightened him. She seemed normal, but her father did not. He was an eccentric man with a sketchy past. Dante had come across a stack of books on witchcraft in his study. But she brushed it off, saying that he had grown up in Massachusetts, and everyone up that way was into the history of Salem.

RELEASE BOOST - The One That Got Away by Magan Vernon

Title: The One That Got Away
Series: Friendship, Texas #4
Author: Magan Vernon
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 24, 2017

Blurb

A brand new standalone from Friendship, Texas featuring everyone's favorite awkward baker and the one that got away.

I looked up and standing there was my ex-boyfriend, Jordan Webber. Maybe ex-boyfriend wasn't the right word. Maybe the boy who I dated for almost two years. Then he graduated early, leaving for art school in New York. He wanted me to come with him, but what future did I have in New York? My parents weren’t paying for me to go to school unless it was a state school with a real degree and all I ever wanted was to do photography. So the portrait studio worked for the time being until I realized I really needed to get out of the house and took the part-time job at the bakery. Between my parents’ divorce, work, and trying to get over my break up, I was basically a hot mess the first two years after high school. Joey came in at the right time as a distraction then the job at the bakery. But I still never forgot about the one that got away.

I hadn't seen Jordan in over four years and there he was, standing there with a hand on one of the boxes and his blue eyes wide open like he'd just seen a ghost.

"Abbey Dillinger?" he asked, it wasn't so much of a question as it was a breathless statement.

I hated him for leaving me. He could have gone to art school in Dallas. He could have stayed if he really did love me. I should have hated him. But seeing him, standing in front of me, I couldn’t hate him. The past four years had been very good to him.

**This book is a standalone in a series of standalones taking place in the fictional town of Friendship, Texas. You don't need to read any of the previous books to understand this one***
